Dictionary Poem Project
In 2020, artist Jane Birdsall-Lander created six prints that comprise the Dictionary Poem Project, Edition III. Drawing from the tumult of the COVID-19 pandemic, the murder of George Floyd and subsequent outrage, and the climate change crisis, each of Birdsall-Lander’s prints contains a dictionary poem related to one of the following words: race, virus, wishbone, context, mask, and home truth. According to the artist, “each word’s ‘meaning’ evolves from its standard origin” to become a poem “that is more associative, graphic, and poetic than a particular word’s conventional meaning.”
