Building dedication plaque

Pruitt and Igoe were the names of the largest public housing projects erected in St. Louis as part of a massive urban renewal program. When completed in 1954, both complexes—collectively known as Pruitt-Igoe—were hailed as an answer to blight and the housing problems in post–World War II St. Louis. For myriad reasons, the hopes were never fulfilled, and two decades later Pruitt-Igoe was razed.
