“In Memoriam” transgender pride flag

Lily Chouteau created this flag, calling it both “art therapy” and “protest art.” On it she wrote the names of trans Americans who had died violently, either by murder or suicide. Over the next few years, she added the names of other trans victims of violence, including Kiwi Herring, a trans woman who was killed in a confrontation with St. Louis city police on August 22, 2017. Chouteau carried the flag in numerous protest marches and other community events in St. Louis, including the 2017 Women’s March and annual Trans Day of Remembrance ceremonies.
