Jeanette Mott Oxford’s campaign flyer

In 2004, Jeanette Mott Oxford, who had already made waves by coming out as a lesbian while at Eden Theological Seminary in 1987, became the first openly LGBTQIA+ person to win elected office in the St. Louis area. Oxford represented a south St. Louis city district for four terms in the state legislature. After zir service in the Missouri House of Representatives, Oxford came to understand zirself as agender and began to go by gender-neutral ze/zir pronouns. This flyer dates to Oxford’s first campaign for the Missouri House of Representatives, which ze narrowly lost to Russ Carnahan.
