Set of celestial and terrestrial globes
Newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst once invited Charles Lindbergh to his apartment, hoping he would accept a movie contract. Lindbergh refused, but he noticed this pair of globes and commented on their beauty. The next day the globes appeared at Lindbergh’s hotel room. He accepted the gift but not the movie contract. The globes were made in Hanover, Germany, possibly around the 1640s based upon the city hallmark and the geographical information on the terrestrial globe, but they may have been made as late as 1700. They appear to be the only pair in existence.
